-
Customs and immigration: Visas are not required for the
- Netherlands Antilles or Aruba. An American entering for a
- temporary visit must have a valid passport, birth certificate or
- other proof of citizenship, and a ticket indicating onward
- passage.
-

-
Climate: Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao are arid and lie below
- the hurricane belt. They resemble the American southwest.
- August, September, and October are the warmest months, and
- December, January, and February the coldest. Temperatures
- seldom rise above 90 F or fall below 80 F, and almost constant
- northeast trade winds lessen the effect of heat and humidity.
- St. Maarten, Saba, and St. Eustatius have more rainfall but a
- similar temperature pattern. Summer clothes are worn year round.
-

-
Health: Drinking water in Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao,
- distilled from the sea, is consequently of high quality. Most
- food is imported and subject to adequate public health controls.
- Overexposure to the sun is probably the main health hazard
- facing the temporary visitor.
-

-
Transportation: US airlines have daily flights to Aruba,
- Curacao, and St. Maarten. Major car rental companies are
- represented on the larger islands. Roads are in generally good
- condition. Taxis and buses are available on major islands.
-

-
Tourist attractions: Tourists are basically attracted by the
- warm weather, but each island has special features, from the
- beaches of Aruba to the architecture of Curacao; scuba diving in
- Bonaire; the sophisticated ambience of St. Maarten; St.
- Eustatius' history; and Saba's picturesque setting. Carnival at
- the start of Lent brings street processions with colorful
- costumes, floats, and dancing. In October, Bonaire hosts an
- annual International Sailing Regatta. New Year's Eve is the
- occasion for spectacular fireworks. Hotel prices are lower in
- the off-season (May-November). Atlantic standard time is
- observed year round, 1 hour ahead of eastern standard time and
- eastern daylight time.
-

-
Holidays: Netherlands Antilles--Carnival Jan. 1; Good
- Friday; Easter Monday (date varies); Queen's Birthday April 30;
- Labor day May 1; Ascension Day (date varies); Christmas Dec 25;
- Boxing Day Dec 26. In addition, July 2 is a holiday in Curacao,
- Sept. 6 in Bonaire, Nov. 11 in St. Maarten, Nov. 16 in St.
- Eustatius, and Dec. 2 in Saba. Aruba--Carnival Jan. 1; Aruba
- Day March 18; Good Friday; Easter Monday (date varies); Queen's
- Birthday April 30; Labor Day May 1; Ascension Day (date varies);
- Christmas Dec. 25; Boxing Day Dec. 26.
